Woman suffers massive allergy to hair dye

The importance of testing a hair dye before proper use has been further reflected this week, after a woman was rushed to hospital following a serious reaction to her hair dye.
Many people that use hair dye at home do not bother to carry out a patch test, which is always recommended by the hair dye manufacturers even if you have used the dye before. Consumers that dye their hair at home are advised to do a patch test forty eight hours before dying their hair to ensure that there will be no allergic reaction. However, many people fail to do this.
The importance of carrying out this test has been further reflected this week, after a woman from the UK was rushed to hospital after having an allergic reaction to the hair dye that she used. Thirty eight year old Paula Pratt is said to have suffered breathing difficulties after her neck swelled up, and was described as looking like the ‘elephant man’ after her fact swelled up to the point where she could not even open her eyelids.
The woman had used a Clairol hair dye, and claims that she did carry out the forty eight hour patch test but still suffered the serious reaction when she used the dye properly. However, whilst Pratt claims to have done a patch test many other people fail to do this, putting themselves in danger of serious problems.
An official from Clairol stated: “We are very sorry to hear about Ms. Paula Pratt’s experience after using a Clairol product. Allergic reactions are very rare, however, we do recommend that all consumers conduct a 48 hour allergy test before each and every use of our colourant products.”
